3 words that come to mind when I think of Yohan and his music; Raw, Earthy, Honest.
My first time hearing Yohan was his feature on David5pa’s song “Beerios”. I was snatched the moment he opened the track. Before looking him up, I would’ve sworn that he was melanin-poppin’. Turns out he is a Korean-Dominican-American. He was born in Busan, South Korea and raised in the Dominican Republic.
2 years ago, when I was in South Carolina, I heard he was having a live performance in NYC. I asked 2 of my friends (not Yohan fans) to pull up for me just to get me some merch. They arrived around the time when he started performing and ended up staying the whole time because they were dazzled by his stage presence.
All of his music tells a story. The story of Yohan Jung. Who he is and where he came from. His EP “Cherry Poppin” epitomizes “raw”. From beginning to end, Yohan reveals layers of himself, and what helped mold him into the artist he is today.
My favorite song on his EP is “Jump”. Besides the fact that it is a BANGERRR, the lyrics , especially the hook+chorus are pretty motivating. The overall message is to bounce back after failure, haters or pessimism and JUMP.
My second favorite song is “Take You Back”. It’s an audio, auto-biography. Yohan speaks about his life from the moment when he was born in Korea and “had a tiny hiney” to when he was 2 years old and moved to the Dominican Republic. He infuses his Dominican heritage by using Spanish bars throughout the song.
I also really appreciate the intro track “Time Capsule (Note to Self)”. It is a raw message to himself and to us, the listener. It’s very humbling to hear him address himself, because it feels like I’m getting to know him on a personal, deeper level while also being able to apply what he says to myself. “Don’t let your pride, don’t let your ego be an obstacle. Also love people….the people that are strangers, the people that are already around you..appreciate them. And don’t worry about what people think. If you say certain things that don’t align with their beliefs, so be it man. Last thing, thank God always…You got this…Let’s get it man.” Wow.
I reached out to Yohan and he agreed to answer some questions for my blog. I asked him…
- When and why/how did you get into music?
“(I) started music after my pops passed away. Made me realize that you can choose what kind of doors you’d like to open.”
As an artist, he said that he is inspired by Nipsey Hussle and Kendrick Lamar. In his song “Jump” he shouts out other inspirational artists including MC Hammer, Jay-Z, Kung Fu Kenny and Eminem. Even though he is inspired by many of the “greats”, Yohan sticks to his own craft and sound. His flow is definitely unique.
- Using 3 words, describe yourself as an artist
“Storytelling, personal, connection.”
Yup, I agree. I could ramble on and on about the storytelling and personal aspect of Yohan’s music.
- Out of all of your music, what is your favorite song?
“Take You Back” is a classic. (I) talked about my upbringing. Also the ones I haven’t released yet.”
On that note, we could be getting some more Yohan Jung HEAT soon! In the meantime you should definitely go check out Yohan’s EP. Follow him on Instagram too! (He posts lot’s of food pics in his story for all those foodies out there).
