Have you ever listened to a song and instantly fell in love with it? Not just the lyrics or the beats, but the whole vibe, the experience at that moment while you were listening? That is how I feel every single time I listen to something produced by my boy David Kim aka David5pa (pronounced Oh-Pa)
I discovered him in 2016 through pH-1’s recommendation. I was watching one of his (pH-1’s) Instagram lives, and he was talking about his long-time friend David. I decided to check out his page, and see what content he had on YouTube and Soundcloud. The first song I heard that was produced by David was “15” by pH-1. And after hearing a few of his K-pop covers on YouTube, I fell in love.
He’s such a down to earth guy. He’s humble yet very good at what he does. He even agreed to meeting up with me and my friends. (I might just do a story time about that day because I nearly had a heart attack because I was fan-girling so much lol)
“David 5pa has produced music for…BuzzFeed, Eric Nam, pH-1 (ft. Golden), Letta J, Big Daffi, Moxie Knox, Yohan Jung, V1NO, Jannie, Sammy iii, Jason Chu, Alan Z, Snacky Chan, Rekstizzy (ft. Do Zo)… and many more.”David5pa’s Website
David5pa is not only well-rounded as a producer. His EP “Quarterlife.mov” is a perfect showcase of his beautiful vocals. My top 3 songs on that EP are Beerios (definitely a “Break Ya Back” type of song), Nice-N-Slow (a beautiful walk through the park type of song), and What If (an “In Your Feelings” type of song). Check out the MV for Beerios!
I reached out to David5pa via Instagram and he agreed to answer some questions for my blog. Let me spill the tea. Let’s get to know him better…
Question 1: Where are you from?
“ I am Korean-American. Born in Manhattan, NY and raised in Rutherford, NJ.”
Question 2: When and why/how did you get into music?
“I fell in love with John Mayer’s music and I started learning his songs on the guitar thanks to the internet and YouTube! My brother is also 11 years older than me, so when he went off to college I was in the 2nd grade. He didn’t take all of his CD’s to school, so I’d sometimes listen to Tupac, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, and a bunch of other random music.”
Question 3: What/who inspires you as an artist?
“I think the artists that inspire me the most are those who make music with a deeper meaning. I’m a huge fan of albums that are cohesive and have a story to tell.”
Question 4: Using 3 words, describe yourself as an artist.
“…Free-spirited, open-minded, and independent.”
Question 5: Out of all of your music, what is your favorite song and why?
“…I like a song called “Westside Highway” because it serves as a reminder to pursue my passions. I hope it serves to encourage others to pursue theirs as well.”
After reading his responses to my questions, I couldn’t help but feel inspired. That’s the same feeling you’ll get when you listen to his music. As an artist, he’s inspired by music with deeper meanings, and everything that his creative finger has touched, embodies that. I appreciate that he values quality over quantity. He takes time to develop his craft.
